A Virginia-based social media startup, Operation Bluebird, has petitioned the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to cancel trademarks for Twitter, arguing that Elon Musk’s X Corp has abandoned them. The startup aims to use the Twitter name and “tweet” for a new platform called twitter.new.
Operation Bluebird’s general counsel, Stephen Coates, a former Twitter trademark lawyer, claims that X has erased the Twitter brand from its products and marketing. While Musk rebranded Twitter as X in 2022 and removed the blue bird logo, X Corp’s 2023 renewal for the Twitter trademark was approved. Experts say X may face challenges defending the trademarks if it no longer uses them, though commercial blocking may still be possible.
