Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and other record labels are suing the San Francisco based nonprofit Internet Archive for copyright infringement over its streaming of digitized music from vintage records. The labels’ lawsuit filed in a federal court in Manhattan said the Archive’s “Great 78 Project” functions as an “illegal record store”. Internet Archive digitally archives websites, books, audio recordings, and other materials and compares itself to a library whose mission is to “provide universal access to all knowledge”. They recently lost another federal lawsuit in Manhattan for violation of copyrights for sharing digital books without permission.
